When we are down and things look dark, Canadians often think of the words of our national guru, Red Green. Always a wise councillor, he advised, “If the women don’t find ya handsome, they should at least find ya handy.” We have all memorized these words, and we know when it’s time to get up off the chesterfield and get out the duct tape.
Things may look a little grim for you right now. Bernie and AOC are giving you stark details about the state of things. People on both sides of our border are losing their jobs, and they’re not happy about it. Prices are going up. Freedom of speech is disappearing; even NPR and PBS are under attack. You’ve lost your Department of Education, and Social Security is looking uneasy. Even the Pope is writing you breakup letters.
But we understand. Even here in small town Canada, we have problems like yours. Some people around here don’t always understand the meaning of the words “public servant.” (Hint: it doesn’t mean “king for four years”). Others seem to think we can just sweep homeless people under the carpet (the solution turns out to be too bumpy). Still others think we can bulldoze our way through protected forests to make a buck (That’s 1.43 U.S., and climbing. Makes Amazon look a lot less attractive.)
We understand that it can seem like there’s nothing an individual can do. But maybe two individuals can do something. Or maybe your church group? Or your Dungeons and Dragons gaming friends? What would happen if you brought up the topic in the daycare waiting room? I’ll bet you’ll find you aren’t alone.
You might be surprised by the number of people who will help you. We are finding this, too. Remember, we’re pulling for you. We’re all in this together.
